DRUM CIRCLE DISTILLING SUPPORTS MOTE WITH MARINE LIFE RUM LABELS

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium has partnered with Drum Circle Distilling, an award-winning small artisan distillery located in Sarasota known for their Siesta Key Spiced Rum, to produce a series of five rum bottle labels depicting different marine animals. These labels will be placed on Drum Circle Distilling's Siesta Key Toasted Coconut Rum and two percent of the sales from each of the labels will be donated directly to the Mote research program for each respective animal.

COULD A SOLAR-POWERED SAILBOAT HELP MONITOR RED TIDE?

Mote Marine Laboratory and Navocean team up to launch an underwater robotic glider and a solar-powered sailboat drone. Seeking new ways to study red tide, Mote Marine Laboratory scientists are helping makers of solar-powered, sailboat drones test their technology in tandem with underwater robots Mote normally deploys to monitor harmful algae in the Gulf of Mexico.

EXPLORE CUBA WITH MOTE SCIENTISTS WHO STUDY ITS MARINE LIFE

Join Mote Marine Laboratory for an educational expedition to Cuba — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover the history, culture and natural ecosystems of this island nation, where Mote scientists and their Cuban colleagues have been advancing marine research together for more than 10 years. Spots remain open for the Dec. 1-8 trip, "Exploring Cuba with Mote Marine Laboratory," which begins in Havana and continues with a live-aboard dive boat expedition to the Gardens of the Queen marine reserve.

HELP MOTE SCIENTISTS RESTORE CORAL REEFS IN KEY WEST
Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory invite the public to help with a coral restoration project at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park in Key West, Florida during June and July. This collaborative project between Mote, Florida State Parks, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA)'s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council will work to restore corals at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park while educating people about reefs and asking volunteer "citizen scientists" to help. All work is being conducted under permits from NOAA and Florida State Parks.

Invasive lionfish: Gotta catch 'em all!
Mote Marine Laboratory is excited to collaborate in the project described by the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS) in their press release below: "Red Tide Forecasting in the Gulf of Mexico on Every Beach, Every Day? Soon There Will be an App for That."

LOCAL SCHOOL RAISES FUNDS FOR MOTE MARINE LABORATORY'S SEA TURTLE HOSPITAL
Bradenton Christian School's sixth grade class raised $876 to benefit Mote Marine Laboratory's Sea Turtle Hospital. The class held a fundraiser April 21 and 22 and sold baked goods and turtle-themed merchandise. All proceeds from the fundraiser were given to the hospitals at Mote, which has cared for 562 sea turtles since 1995.

Founded in 1955, Mote Marine Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 research organization based in Sarasota, Fla., with field stations in eastern Sarasota County, Charlotte Harbor and the Florida Keys. Mote is dedicated to today's research for tomorrow's oceans with an emphasis on world-class research relevant to conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, healthy habitats and natural resources.

Research programs include studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and on the environment, the heath of wild fisheries, developing sustainable and successful fish restocking techniques and food production technologies and the development of ocean technology to help us better understand the health of the environment. Mote research programs also focus on understanding the population dynamics of manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems.

Mote's vision includes positively impacting public policy through science-based outreach and education. Showcasing this research is The Aquarium at Mote, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 365 days a year. Learn more at www.mote.org.
