Dr. Eugenie Clark: Celebrating her life and legacy

We celebrated the life and legacy of our founding "Shark Lady," Dr. Eugenie Clark during a special memorial on what would have been her 93rd birthday on May 4. The memorial drew more than 500 family, friends, colleagues and admirers who were inspired by her passion for our oceans.
Dr. Clark, who passed away in February, had a career that spanned nearly 75 years and included groundbreaking work on sharks and other fishes. She was also a much-loved teacher who touched countless lives and helped people around the world develop their own love for our oceans. Clark is survived by four children, Hera, Aya, Tak and Niki Konstantinou, and grandson Eli Weiss.

Join Us: Turtle Nesting Season Walk & Talks

We recently documented the first sea turtle nests of 2015 for the beaches we monitor between Longboat Key and Venice. Our Gulf Coast is a hotspot for nesting sea turtles, but how much do you know about our flippered friends?
Learn the tale behind the turtle tracks by joining our free, educational Turtle Walks on Saturdays in June and July. Turtle Walks are led by a Mote-trained volunteer who participates in our Sea Turtle Patrol and in the Longboat Key Turtle Watch, which partners with us to monitor the Key's beaches.

Upcoming: Join us for tee times at 10a.m. and noon on June 20 for a special mini-golf fundraising tournament at Evies Family Golf Center, 4735 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota. The event is being organized by a local 11-year-old who wants to save sea turtles.

A loggerhead sea turtle rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and treated for boat-strike injuries at Mote returned to the wild on May 8 from Lido Key. The 255-pound adult female turtle was nicknamed "Mrs. Turt Lee" after Chief Petty Officer Ekahi Lee, supervisor of the Coast Guard crewmembers who rescued the animal.
Mote caregivers and Coast Guard officials carried Mrs. Turt Lee to the beach, gave her a moment to gather her bearings on shore and then Mote staff guided her out to sea. Once in the water, Mrs. Turt Lee raised her head, took a breath and swam off toward the horizon.

You may have heard that Microsoft is getting ready to open a new store at University Town Center (UTC), 140 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota, Fla. 34243. But did you know that as part of their grand opening celebration they're offering grants of up to $500,000 worth of new computer software and $4,000 for new hardware for deserving nonprofit organizations?
Mote is in the running to receive grants, but we need your help to do it. At least 40 people must to visit the store when it opens at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 11 and meet us in the designated location for Mote supporters. Once Microsoft officials determine that we've met our goal, we will receive a grant.

A few spots remain for campers in Mote's 2015 summer programs. Kids ages 2 through high school can get involved in something fishy at our marine science-themed camps that take place from June through August.

A worldwide ocean celebration is on the horizon — join the fun during the World Oceans Day Family Festival on June 6 at Mote Aquarium. Mote's World Oceans Day event will spotlight the ocean's deep connection to the human spirit and the boundless inspirational power of our natural world's greatest resource with a fun family festival featuring games and crafts focused on green practices, marine science and conservation by Mote and other local organizations.

Hugh & Buffett in the Spotlight |

Our resident manatees Hugh & Buffett stole the spotlight in a new Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom web series launched on April 23 — raising awareness for their species and demonstrating their special job participating in Mote research to benefit wild manatee conservation. Hugh and Buffett are the world's most highly trained manatees and they participate in daily training sessions that have allowed Mote researchers to study how manatees perceive and navigate their underwater world.
"Observing a research session with Hugh and Buffet was remarkable; I've never seen anything like it!" said Wild Kingdom host Stephanie Arne. "The more information the animal care team learns about manatee senses, the better cautionary plans we can implement in order to find a balance between recreational use of manatee habitat and conservation of the species. What Mote staff discover could actually help save this endangered species."
