Virginia passed away in April at age 93. During her longtime service to the southwest Florida community, she contributed in countless ways to Mote and also to the Longboat Key Turtle Watch, supporting ocean-related education and conservation.

She skillfully combined her interests in wildlife, art and writing, illustrating early Mote newsletters and writing numerous columns for the Observer newspapers to educate readers about marine life. She organized speakers for Mote's volunteer general meetings, where hundreds of volunteers have gained new knowledge, and organized volunteer field trips. In general, she championed one of Mote's greatest missions: helping people of all ages become more ocean-literate.
